  It is somewhat common knowledge among the Fate fandom (and the larger Nasuverse fandom) that Fate/stay night originally had several routes, each focusing on a different heroine. The final product only has three (one for Saber, one for Rin and one for Sakura), but Nasu considered several other routes for Medusa, Medea, and even a new Servant named Tachie, who occupied the Shielder class. However, the most sought-after route is also the one that got farthest in the planning stages: the Illya route.  Illya has been a fan-favorite ever since the original VN was released back in 2004, and now that Heaven’s Feel finally got adapted and audiences worldwide could experience the finale to Fate/stay night , a route focused on this silver-haired heroine has become a hot topic.   I find that my fascination with Fate/stay night is a lot like my fascination with Star Wars , or Sword Art Online . I’ve written extensively about all of these series, and I have a lot of love for them, but for each character that was well-written and each scene that was well-executed, there’s another that feels…lacking, for better or for worse.  In general, there’s something quite satisfying about authors revisiting an existing story and working to improve it. This applies to both the original creator trying to improve their story, as well as fans working to improve it. I wrote an essay some time ago about the changes I would’ve made to the Star Wars prequels—both big and small—to make it work better as a cohesive trilogy and as part of the larger saga.
