The Last of Us Part II: A Retrospective

The Last of Us Part II is a game that intrigues me in many ways, and for many of the same reasons that stories like Star Wars , the DCEU and Fate/stay night intrigue me. These are all amazing stories, but they also feel incomplete in some ways. They’re not perfect, that’s for sure, but they’re within spitting distance of greatness, and it’s that tiny gap between “pretty damn good” and “holy shit this is amazing” that gets my storyteller brain going.  Like those stories, Part II always felt incomplete on some level, and for a long time, I struggled to understand why. One common opinion of the game I’ve heard since its release is: “No matter how you feel about it, The Last of Us Part II is a game that did what it set out to do.”  But…what exactly did it set out to do?
